*Questions of Civilization – Socrates to Freud and everyone in between. Answering the basic questions of humanity, life
and civilization. Where I learned "The
unexamined life is not worth living" at all and embraced it as one of my personal
philosophies.
*Shakespeare's Tragedies – Who doesn't love Shakespeare? This was a great chance to read some of the
offbeat tragedies that didn't gain the popularity of his other plays. It was also a look into Shakespeare, the man,
and what we know/do not know about his life.
*History of Philosophy – all the greats and some not so great. People who knew what was up and some who sat
around and did too little and wrote too much.
Philosophy wasn't necessarily my favorite area of study, but I do like
seeing how philosophy is impacted by the history of the age and vice versa, how
history is impacted by philosophy.
Perfect case in point: Marxism.
*History of California – History
of the Gold Rush and industry (discriminatory laws against Native Americans
& Asians), Father Junipero Serra & the 21 California Missions, Mexican
and Spanish significance, Urban design and development of California, Dust Bowl
& sojourners who headed west, and California as a melting pot for type A
personalities breaking away from the norm
Religious Thought – theories and arguments for and against a
monotheistic God, St. Thomas Aquinas among many others, history of all the
major religions and their basis for worship, polytheism, pantheism,
panentheism, etc.
*Environmental Science
– how the
environment relates to public policy, land laws & governmental regulations
*
Senior Thesis in History
– Wrote 85 pages of research and narrative
proving my claim that
Chile
's "hangover" or "scar tissue" from its turbulent past (living 18 years
under a military dictatorship installed by the
US
) prevent it from fully being able to
embrace the opportunities of the present.
